Does rational thought have a limit?
Date: 12/16/2017 2:00:00 PM
Topic of Study: Literature
Presenter: Katie Cumsille
Synopsis: Isaac Asimov, a world-renowned author and biochemist, wrote many wonderful fanatical stories of artificial intelligence. One of his short stories, known as Reason, gives a compelling argument on the limits of rational thought and creation. Join us as we take an outsider's perspective on Asimov's tale and look inwardly in how we derive our beliefs and what we consider to be truth.

Are you a bystander, warrior, general, or king?
Date: 1/20/2018 2:30:00 PM
Topic of Study: Literature
Presenter: Katie Cumsille
Synopsis: Man can be divided into many different categories. In this month's MPS we will ask ourselves what category of human are we: bystander, warrior, general, or king and we will use Frank Herbert's classic science fiction, Dune, to help answer the question. Why must we categorize ourselves? Many believe it isn't necessary and some ways they are right. However, by separation we can see how humanity is truly united. This is the very purpose of Freemasonry. Together we will discover whether we are the common man, Fremen, Leto, or Paul. (Note: reading the book prior to attending this Meetup is not necessary!)

Is the evolution of language an indication of the evolution of man?
Date: 8/18/2018 2:30:00 PM
Topic of Study: Formal Science
Presenter: Katie Cumsille
Synopsis: How well do you understand your native language? Its intricate and complex nature causes misunderstandings and conflict as well as communicates feelings and emotions. There is no group of people, including Freemasons, that do not exhibit a level of language, whether it be complex or simple. Such variation in language leads one to ask: Is there a connection between an extensive language system and the evolution of its speakers? Join us as we study the foundation of psycholinguistics and see if we can correlate it to Man's evolution, and more especially to our own personal evolution.
