American Gods: Can Old Gods Thrive in a Modern World?
Date: 12/10/2017 2:30:00 PM
Topic of Study: Literature
Presenter: Cat Pedini
Synopsis: American Gods is a novel by Neil Gaiman, now a TV series made for Starz by Bryan Fuller. It posits the idea of gods as immigrants, brought from the old country by old believers, now trying to exist in a modern world; a world more inclined to worship technology and media than Odin or Anansi. What would happen if these, the old gods and the new, were to wage a war for dominance in the minds of men? Where would the battle wage, what would winning or losing look like, and how would this war change the world? Can Freemasonry provide a structure within which all gods can exist?

Is there a secret to success?
Date: 1/6/2018 2:30:00 PM
Topic of Study: Philosophy
Presenter: Michele Strevel
Synopsis: What do we define as success? The word degree in its primitive meaning signifies a step. Is it possible to achieve personal success through steps or degrees and if so, what are they? Business strategists claim to use certain defined steps to achieve their goals, psychologists help patients through personal struggles using defined steps to navigate through the myriad of human emotions. Is Masonic knowledge a guide for a successful, balanced life?

Topic of Study: Formal Science
Presenter: Bro Klaudia Suszcynska
Synopsis: Superfoods, anti-oxidants, probiotics are all modern terms used to identify food that promotes a healthier lifestyle and could potentially cure everything from the common cold to cancer. Can we really heal our bodies and improve our mental health with the proper diet? what special properties do these foods have? does Freemasonry promote a healthier lifestyle?

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest ... a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures and the whole of nature in its beauty."
